Latisse is an FDA-approved treatment for people with inadequate or short eyelashes. It is applied directly to the skin of upper eyelid at the base of the eyelashes. Over time, Latisse makes the eyelashes grow longer, fuller, and darker. As directed by Dr. Leonard, Latisse is applied nightly to your lids using the supplied sterile applicators. Early results are typically seen after 4 weeks of treatment and full benefits are seen at about 18 weeks.
The active ingredient in Latisse, is called bimatropost. While the exact science behind the growth mechanism is unknown, experts believe that Latisse affects the growth stage of the eyelash in a couple of ways; firstly, by lengthening the growth cycle and secondly, by increasing the number of eyelash hairs that are produced during this cycle. The results are not just an illusion of growth, but actual lash growth, providing an increase in thickness and darkness of your lashes.
Latisse was discovered by Allegan, its manufacturer, by coincidence when developing a treatment to reduce intraocular pressure (glaucoma). Many patients soon discovered an exciting side-effect, that they were growing fuller longer eyelashes while under treatment. After several years of studying the bimatropost as a treatment for eyelash enhancement, Latisse was granted the first FDA approval, and has been used by thousands of patients with exciting results.
